In autumn of 1992 - Mick Carr (one time Liberal Democrat Member of Parliament for Ribble Valley) decided that there was a lack of good live music in Rossendale. To alleviate this phenomenon he opened the 'Sick Pig' club in the Royal Hotel in Waterfoot. When Dave Morleys disco was introduced 'Sick Pig' amalgamated into the Zero Club. Between 1992 and 1998 the Zero Club hosted bands (Mostly in the Royal - some at Bacup Leisure Hall - some at Rawtenstalls Astoria - now sadly defunct due to the criminal neglect of our bloody lousy council) including - Hybernoid (Rossendales finest export) - The Mighty Asylum - LongDogs - Tan Sads - Spithead - Bad to The Bone - Blind Mole Rat - The Rhythmites - Blythe Power - Toss The Feathers - Theodotion - Eternal Exile - The Crushing Circle - Dreissers Egg - Pink Torpedos - and many, many more! Mick has always done loads for disaster appeals and such like (but he doesn't like to talk about it mate!) and a fair percentage of these gigs raised funds for summat or other. Its also worth mentioning that between 1993 and 1997 it was Mick who with the backing of Trinity Youth Centre in Clitheroe - put on the now legendary Clitheroe Castle Music Festivals. Oh yes it was he! Bacup Footy Club became a venue for quieter folk and acoustic acts at around the same time before becoming the main (unbeatable sweat box) small venue with the demise of the Royal Hotels live music licence. This is when Mick finished his transformation from a 'Sick Pig' into a 'Hairy Dog' and Hairy Dog Promotions keeps going from strength to strength. Providing key venues for local heroes including Pie, Dear Superstar, Mystical Calunga, Mrs Cakehead etc... also attracting such mega international acts as The Modern Skirts, In The Fur, Ned Evett and Gringo Star - (will somebody please back us to start a record label so we can snap these boys up)! Wherever he goes - Mick is always switched on - always keeping one eye open to get some new talent showcased, always trying to improve the already magnificent array of established live touring bands who use our venues as a regular stop-off - always loving the music, I think thats the key - long may he wag his tenacious tail!
